You’re heading off on vacation, but your cat will be home alone for a while. Of course, you’ll be thinking about them! But you really need this break. Here are some things you can do to ensure your furry friend is happy while you’re away.

Can cats be left alone?

Healthy adult cats can be left alone for certain periods during the day. However, they shouldn’t be left completely on their own for long stretches throughout your vacation.

The safest option while you’re away is to have your cat stay in their familiar home, with a trusted person checking in on them. Ideally, this person should visit every day. In these situations, it’s important to ensure they have enough food and water, clean litter, notice any changes in behavior, and receive some social interaction.

Your best friends while you’re away might be an automatic feeder, a water fountain, and a 24/7 camera system. But human oversight is essential. Unexpected situations like device malfunctions or sudden illnesses can occur.

Kittens, elderly cats, those on medication, or cats with health issues should be checked on more frequently.

Before you leave, keep their routine consistent and make sure to provide the caretaker with your vet and emergency contact information. But no matter what, you’re going to miss them dearly. You’ll see reminders of them in every view, every meal, and every cat you encounter. It’s inevitable.
