The New Star of Your Pantry: Ube

Matcha is still a favorite, but now ube is making waves as a superfood. Ube is a purple root vegetable native to the Philippines. While it resembles purple sweet potato, it belongs to a different plant family. Its vibrant color comes from natural plant pigments.

The flavor is quite different from matcha. It's subtly sweet and creamy, with hints of vanilla, hazelnut, and pistachio. This makes it a popular choice for lattes, ice creams, and cheesecakes. For those who find matcha's slightly bitter and grassy taste (some might say akin to henna) unappealing, ube offers a gentle alternative.

Ube is a nutritious root vegetable packed with antioxidants. It's rich in fiber, potassium, and vitamins A and C. While it’s not a miracle food on its own, it can be quite effective when included as part of a balanced diet.

Of course, it can't replace matcha. Since matcha is ground green tea, it naturally contains caffeine and provides an energy boost. Ube, on the other hand, is caffeine-free, making it a great evening drink. So, think of it that way when you enjoy it.
