Is Silicone a Safer Alternative to Plastic?

Silicone has become quite popular in recent years and is often seen as an alternative to plastic. But is silicone toxic?

Silicone is not the same as plastic. It’s a synthetic material made by chemically processing silicon, an element derived from sand. Its flexibility, durability, and heat resistance make it suitable for a wide range of uses, from kitchenware to cosmetics.

Current scientific data suggests that high-quality silicone is generally safe. In particular, food-grade and medical-grade silicones do not pose significant health risks when in contact with food. However, it’s not entirely without concerns. Some studies indicate that under certain conditions or with prolonged exposure, very small amounts of compounds called siloxanes may be released. Therefore, scientists emphasize the need for ongoing research.

Quality is crucial when it comes to silicone. That’s why it’s important to choose reputable brands. However, silicone does have a downside in terms of environmental impact. It is not easily recyclable and can take hundreds of years to break down in nature. So, its environmental effects are not entirely independent of plastic.

Here are some tips for safer use:

Choose food-grade or medical-grade silicone.

Avoid using products that are worn, cracked, or discolored.

Whenever possible, opt for alternatives like glass, ceramic, and stainless steel.

Silicone items that come into brief contact with food, like spatulas and oven mitts, carry a lower risk compared to silicone containers used for long-term food storage. Keep this in mind.
